Following the success of his outreach trip to Germany last year, Policy & Outreach Officer Niall Foster returned to Frankfurt to speak at  ‘No Place Like Home?’ on 18 April.

No Place Like Home?

Hosted by Irish Business Network Germany and the German Irish Lawyers & Business Association, the ‘No Place Like Home?’ event aimed at supporting Irish emigrants who wish to return to Ireland. The event featured networking opportunities and informative talks on the legal, financial, and practical aspects of returning from Germany. You can view the full event programme here.

Following opening remarks from Acting Consul General of Ireland in Frankfurt Patrick Jaques, Niall was honoured to have the opportunity to present on accessing rights and entitlements upon return – one of our main areas of expertise in our work supporting citizens returning to Ireland. Niall’s presentation covered the nuts and bolts of returning, including, where to go, what to think about, and most importantly, how to prepare.

Niall also touched on the importance of looking after your wellbeing on return. With so many things to plan when moving home, wellbeing is often overlooked in favour of practical considerations, when it should really be a top priority. Some key pointers from Niall for minding yourself as you move back to Ireland:

  • Manage expectations
  • Accept that adjusting will take time
  • Embrace change
  • Consider and anticipate challenges in your planning and after you move home
  • Reach out for support from social networks or organisations like Crosscare Irish Diaspora Support Project (contact us here)
