Returning to Ireland: Why Planning Matters More Than Ever
What does it really mean to come home after living abroad?
In two recent episodes of the Expat Taxes Podcast: Taxbytes for Expats, our Project Leader Sarah Owen joined host Stephanie Wickham to discuss the realities of Irish emigration, return migration and the support available to Irish citizens and their families through Crosscare Irish Diaspora Support Project.
Every year, we support people who are planning a move abroad, considering a return to Ireland, or facing difficult circumstances that require additional support. While many people look forward to coming home, the reality is that returning to Ireland can be more complex than expected.
Return Migration Is More Than a Move Home
As Sarah explains, returning to Ireland is not simply the reverse of emigrating. People change while they are abroad, and Ireland changes too.
Many returnees are surprised by the practical challenges they encounter, including:
- Finding housing in a competitive market
- Accessing social welfare supports and understanding eligibility requirements
- Registering with a GP
- Securing school places for children
- Rebuilding social and professional networks
Even when a return is carefully planned, adjusting to life back in Ireland can take time.
The Emotional Side of Returning
Alongside the practical challenges, many people experience ‘reverse culture shock’, and it can take time to feel fully settled again. Returnees may miss aspects of their life abroad while simultaneously reconnecting with family, friends and communities in Ireland. Feelings around identity, belonging and loss are common but often overlooked parts of the return journey.
How Crosscare Can Help
Crosscare Irish Diaspora Support Project provides information, guidance and advocacy for Irish citizens and their families who are emigrating or returning to Ireland.
Our support ranges from helping people understand the practicalities of a planned move to assisting vulnerable returnees who may be experiencing homelessness, family crisis, financial hardship or other challenges. Our goal is not to encourage or discourage migration, but to help people make informed decisions and access the supports they need.
