Have your say: help shape Ireland’s new diaspora strategy
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is inviting Irish people around the world to take part in the global Irish survey, the most extensive consultation of our diaspora in almost five years. Whether you are living abroad, have recently returned to Ireland, or work with Irish communities overseas, this is your chance to share your perspectives and help shape the future of Ireland’s engagement with its global community.
This survey will inform the development of a new diaspora strategy that reflects the diverse experiences, needs, and aspirations of Irish people worldwide. Your insights will help ensure that government policies and supports are responsive, inclusive, and forward-looking.
Why take part?
Ireland’s connection to its diaspora is one of its greatest strengths. With over 70 million people of Irish heritage around the world, Irish emigrants and their descendants have made extraordinary contributions in every corner of the globe. But every journey and every community is unique.
By taking part in the survey, you will:
- Have your voice heard on the issues that matter most to you, your family, and your community.
- Help shape government policies and services that affect Irish people abroad and Irish people who have returned or are returning to Ireland.
- Contribute to a shared vision for Ireland’s relationship with its diaspora into the future.
Who can take part?
The survey is open to:
- Irish citizens and people of Irish heritage living outside Ireland.
- Those who have returned to live in Ireland after time abroad.
- Organisations and networks that support Irish communities internationally.
Whether you’ve been abroad for a few months or many decades, your experiences are valuable.
How to contribute?
There are several ways you can participate:
- Individuals: Share your views by completing the global Irish survey for Individuals
(Deadline: 31 August 2025) - Organisations: Provide your perspective as a community group or service provider by filling in the global Irish survey for organisations or submitting Position Paper to GIS2025@thediasporainstitute.com (Deadline: 31 August 2025).

This new consultation will build on that work, adapting to new realities and strengthening Ireland’s connections around the world.
