ERMiNe Brussels Seminar: Strengthening European Collaboration
From 23–26 June 2025, Brussels played host to the second in-person seminar of the European Return and Migration Network (ERMiNe). Building on the momentum of our Dublin kick-off meeting earlier this year, the four-day programme brought together partners from across Europe to deepen collaboration, exchange expertise, and strengthen our shared vision of improving services and support for EU migrants and returnees.
ERMiNe brings together key organisations from Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Germany, and Spain. This Brussels seminar provided a crucial opportunity to connect with European institutions and partners, helping us situate our work within wider EU policy developments and enhance our collective impact.
Engaging sessions and key connections
The seminar began with an inspiring session led by Professor Mieke Schrooten, a member of the ERMiNe Advisory Board, from the Centre for Research on Environmental and Social Change (CRESC). She shared her expertise on transnational migration, care, and family life, offering a detailed analysis of the European Migration Pact, the war in Ukraine, and the mental health needs of migrant children and families.
Building on these broader European perspectives, we next attended the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) Conference, where safeguarding freedom of movement and addressing emerging challenges for EU citizens were at the forefront of discussions. This was followed by an engaging interactive session with Simona Barbu from FEANTSA, which delved into the pressing issue of homelessness among mobile EU citizens and explored how stronger support systems can be developed across member states. This session opened the door for further collaboration with FEANTSA.
Further learning came through a practical workshop with Maria Demoz Tewodros and Jacopo Pistorella from EUAbout, who provided guidance on accessing and navigating EU funding programmes. This was complemented by valuable insights from SOLVIT led by Anouschka Jansson on how their service helps EU citizens resolve cross-border issues, from social security concerns to consumer rights disputes.
The last day we had an interesting meeting with Anke Van De Velde and Karel Michiels from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Their perspectives underscored how cross-sector collaboration can significantly improve support for migrants and returnees, particularly in third countries.
Building on Dublin’s momentum
This Brussels seminar was an exciting continuation of the relationships and plans developed during our kick-off meeting in Dublin. With the next meeting set for Berlin later this year, the momentum continues as we work together to improve our services and share best practices.
